JIM NEAL WINS UNC-GREENSBORO U.S. SENATE DEBATE

“The Best Candidate to Beat Elizabeth Dole”

(Greensboro, NC) U.S. Senate candidate Jim Neal convincingly won the U.S. Senate debate at UNC-Greensboro tonight. The debate, sponsored by SpartanTV, is the only televised debate of the primary season. Neal, a small business and economic development expert, clearly bested his primary opponents on both style and substance.

Neal brought his grassroots campaign’s message of change to the debate.

“People are tired of business as usual in Washington. They understand that career politicians who are part of the broken system in Raleigh cannot bring about the change we need in Washington,” said Neal.

Neal made the case that’s has the best chance of beating Elizabeth Dole in November. “Democrats win when we offer voters a clear choice, not me-too imitations of corporate Republicans.”

Neal showed his 25 years of expertise in the private sector when he discussed economic development, health care reform, and energy independence. Neal also offered a clear choice on Iraq, advocating for a redeployment of troops, rather than the prolonged occupation strategy.

“We need real world experience in Washington, not more corporate lawyers,” Neal said. “People across North Carolina are struggling to find work, and few leaders in Washington understand their plight because they’ve never held a real job themselves.”

NEAL WINS GREENSBORO ENDORSEMENTS FOR U.S. SENATE

“The Candidate Best Suited for the Job”

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Neal picked up two endorsements Tuesday, including the first media endorsement of the primary, and they came right in the backyard of his primary rival, State Senator Kay Hagan.

Greensboro’s Yes! Weekly and the Guilford County Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America announced they are backing Jim Neal for the U.S. Senate nomination in the May 6 Democratic primary.

Triad publication YES! Weekly noted Neal’s forthrightness and progressive credentials. “Are North Carolinians ready to elect Neal? The answer at YES! Weekly is yes. Neal is the more progressive of the two candidates, particularly in his opposition to granting immunity to telecommunications companies that cooperated with the Bush administration’s warrantless wiretapping program. He has been unequivocal about this.”

Yes! praised the Neal campaign’s openness and energetic outreach. “Jim Neal of Chapel Hill has been barnstorming the state … cultivating his netroots alongside his grassroots, blogging regularly as he crosses the state in his Escape Hybrid… We want a senator we can communicate with, and so far Hagan has not shown that she’s ready to do that.”

The Guilford County Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America announced their endorsement of Jim Neal on Tuesday evening. “We’re proud to endorse Jim Neal. We feel he is the most progressive candidate in the primary, and the best suited for the job to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate, and beat Elizabeth Dole this November,” said Lee Baker, Chair, Guilford Chapter, Progressive Democrats of America.

Jim Neal said, “As someone who was born and raised in Greensboro, I am honored that activists and journalists from my hometown support our grassroots campaign for the United States Senate. Our campaign recognizes that the real agents of change this year are the citizens who work tirelessly for our future, and it is together as a campaign that we have won these endorsements. Our message is getting through. The people of North Carolina want a government that works for all the people, not career politicians and politically connected insiders. Remember, regular citizens have more votes than all the elite special interest money and slick TV ads put together.”

Jim Neal also picked up an important endorsement in Wautauga County from Pam Williamson of Pamspicks.net. “Jim Neal visited Boone and was smart and appealing,” she wrote. “He claims he will win based on grassroots support in spite of Hagan’s money and insider endorsements.”

These endorsements add to the growing momentum of Neal’s grassroots movement.

- On Saturday April 12th, Neal won the 10th Congressional District Straw Poll - a conservative area - with 54% of the vote. The 10th District Chairman Tony McEwen said: “Strength for a Democratic candidate in this type of more rural setting is certainly a great indicator of which candidates will fare best in the general election. For a Democrat to be successful statewide in North Carolina, they not only will have to get support from urban areas but also be able to pick up more conservative voters in rural counties, like you will find in the 10th district.”
- The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg endorsed Jim Neal as “the ideal candidate to defeat Elizabeth Dole.” Dwayne Collins, Chairman of the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg says, “The membership of the Black Political Caucus is proud to support Mr. Neal with our endorsement in the U.S. Senate race. We thought Jim is the ideal candidate to defeat Elizabeth Dole, and that is why we are behind his candidacy. He was the best candidate on the issues that affect all citizens, but especially members of the African American community. We look forward to working with Jim Neal to improve the lives of the human family of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.”

- Blue America PAC, a progressive online community of blogs including Crooks & Liars, Firedoglake, Digby’s Hullabaloo, and Down with Tyranny has endorsed Neal. Howie Klein, co-founder of the Blue America PAC, says, “What motivated Jim to run — his campaign’s principal underlying theme — is his feeling that Congress has not been responsive to the people who own and pay for and fund our democracy,” Klein said. “Jim Neal in the Senate would go a long way towards righting the wrongs that have been inflicted on our country in recent years by corporatist rule.”

- Americablog, an influential national political blog, endorses Jim Neal. “Jim is a proud Democrat running for Senate. And, clearly, he is right on the issues. He’ll run circles around Liddy Dole,” Americablogs Joe Sudbay says “Jim is not the “establishment” candidate for the primary. However, the polls we’ve seen show a close primary race at this point.”

- eQuality Giiving endorsed Jim Neal. eQuality is the nation’s largest online donor community, supporting candidates and causes to achieve LGBT equality.

The winner in the May 6th primary will face off against Republican incumbent Senator Elizabeth Dole.

JIM NEAL WINS N.C. 10th STRAW POLL 54% to 46%

“This Shows the Power of the Grassroots”

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Jim Neal won North Carolina’s 10th Congressional District Straw Poll Saturday with 54% of the vote, besting his better funded rival in the May 6th primary.

“Today’s results show the power of the grassroots. The people in the 10th Congressional District spoke, and their voice is louder than insider money and TV ads. Despite being outspent two to one, our message is getting through. North Carolinians are supporting our movement for a government that works for all the people,” Neal said.

District Chairman Tony McEwen said: “Strength for a Democratic candidate in this type of more rural setting is certainly a great indicator of which candidates will fare best in the general election. For a Democrat to be successful statewide in North Carolina, they not only will have to get support from urban areas but also be able to pick up more conservative voters in rural counties, like you will find in the 10th district.”

People lined up early at the Newton-Conover Civic and Performance Place in Newton for the event, which included a barbeque lunch and bluegrass music as well as balloting. Doors opened at 11 a.m. and a crowd had already gathered by 10:30 in the morning.

Shortly after noon, Neal gave a rousing speech to the hundreds gathered at the event. Senator Hagan also attended and spoke after Neal.

Two of the three minor candidates in the U.S. Senate race attended, but did not speak. The three minor candidates did not earn a single vote among them – an interesting development since they were eligible to vote for themselves. The winner in the May 6th primary will face off against Republican incumbent Senator Elizabeth Dole.

When the final results were tabulated, Neal’s grassroots movement for the U.S. Senate nomination had earned 127 votes to Senator Kay Hagan’s 108.

Other results in the Straw Poll: Obama 138, Clinton 109; and Perdue 129, Moore 115.

The 10th Congressional district is comprised of Catawba, Cleveland, Burke, Lincoln, Iredell, Caldwell, Rutherford, Avery, Mitchell, and Gaston counties.

U.S. SENATE DEM PRIMARY A DEAD HEAT - Neal Ties Better Funded Rival

Democratic candidate Jim Neal and State Senator Kay Hagan are in a dead heat in the primary race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate according to a new independent poll.

Nationally recognized nonpartisan pollsters SurveyUSA found 20% of likely voters prefer Jim Neal, compared with 21% for State Senator Kay Hagan, well within the poll’s margin of error of +/- 3.7%.

The winner of the May 6th primary will face off against Republican incumbent Senator Elizabeth Dole.

“This proves that grassroots politics works and people power trumps the power of money. Despite being outspent two to one, our message is getting through. The average contribution to our campaign is $80, and I am honored that thousands of North Carolinians are putting their hard-earned money behind us. I will continue reaching out to people across the state, listening to their concerns and learning from their ideas so we can have a government that works for all the people,” Neal said.

SurveyUSA also found podiatrist Howard Staley was preferred by 4%; Attorney Marcus Williams, 5%; and truck driver Duskin Lassiter, 6%; with 45% of likely voters undecided. SurveyUSA conducted the poll for WTVD-TV in Durham.

SurveyUSA has accurately predicted results in the 2008 primaries on par or better than the Gallup poll. SurveyUSA has polled 26 contests across the nation this election cycle.

SurveyUSA is an independent, non-partisan, full-service opinion research firm that conducts scientific research for media, government, and private-sector clients in all 50 states. More than 19 of the nation’s 25 largest media companies have contracted with SurveyUSA to conduct opinion research.

The grandson of a carpenter, public school teacher and two mill workers, Jim Neal was born in Greensboro in 1956, where he attended public school. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. Following graduation he joined Goldman Sachs as a financial analyst. He returned to school at the University of Chicago, where he earned an MBA and worked a series of part-time jobs to pay his way through school.

As an investment banker at Salomon Brothers, Neal earned a reputation for leadership and innovative strategies while advising Fortune 500 companies on how to play successful roles in a changing global economy. He also worked as a senior investment banker with E.F Hutton and Bear Stearns, serving clients that ranged from Bank of America and American Express to Lincoln National Corporation and Transamerica.

For the past two decades, Neal has focused his career on information technology and healthcare companies, including serving as chief executive officer of RxMarketplace.com, a start-up firm that helped pharmacists offer patients prescription drugs at more affordable prices. Since 2000, Neal has led several private companies prior to founding The Agema Group, a financial advisory firm based in Chapel Hill.

Neal has continued his active involvement in nonprofit groups and political initiatives. A member of the Board of Governors of the New School from 2002 to 2006, he also served as a national finance committee member for Wes Clark for President and the Kerry-Edwards campaigns, as well as acting as a national fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Erskine Bowles in 2004.

Neal has served his community as an overnight volunteer at a homeless shelter, a lay minister to mentally ill residents of an assisted-care facility, and a sponsor of a post-war Vietnamese refugee family in alliance with the International Rescue Committee.

Neal lives in Chapel Hill with the younger of his two sons, Winston.

Statement on the 40th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death

On this day when we recall the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we can also be inspired by the courage he showed in dark and dangerous times. His words continue to remind each of us to find our own words to speak out every day for a tolerant and just society.

“We have an opportunity to make America a better nation.” These words, spoken by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on this day in 1968 shortly before his death, are just as true today. They still give courage to people of all nations who seek a more fair and just society. Dr. King lived without fear and his life reminds us how much can be accomplished by standing strong for what is right.

On this day of remembrance of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. let’s recall what he lived and worked for fearlessly each day. In the style of the prophets, he called on society to grow in tolerance and justice. And in these difficult times, let’s not forget that unique strength he shared through his words and actions on behalf of all people.

Statement To Media At Craven Community College New Bern, NC

I want to thank the League of Women Voters and Public Radio East for giving voters the opportunity to hear the Democratic candidates for the United States Senate.

The voters deserve to hear the candidates in an open unscripted forum. We need more of these exchanges.

This is an important election and there are fundamental differences between myself and Senator Kay Hagan.

But if Senator Hagan has her way, they will never be known.

The following organizations have offered to stage debates: WTVD-TV in Durham, WLTT Radio in Wilmington, the statewide African American Caucus and the Young Democrats of North Carolina.

Senator Hagan only agreed to this one forum tonight after she unilaterally changed the ground rules. The other candidates were excluded from the discussion.

The voters should not be excluded from an open unscripted discussion of the issues facing our state and our nation.

They deserve better than that.

Neal Releases Statement Concerning the O.L.F.

Jim Neal, candidate for U.S. Senate, has released the following statement concerning to O.L.F to the residents and citizens of Northeastern North Carolina.

Neal will be speaking at the Edenton Town Hall Meeting on the OLF on Saturday, April 5. More details to come!

“Dear Concerned Citizens against the OLF:

I am writing to let you know that I stand with you, and I want to help.

The people of Gates, Camden, and Currituck Counties do not want the OLF in their community. If government of the people, for the people and by the people means anything, that should be the end of the story.

But it isn’t.

The Navy is proceeding with its plans without input from local residents and despite their opposition. This raises questions of how the Navy makes its citing decisions.

The OLF serves as a warning about a government that is out of touch with the people. Impersonal bureaucracies in far away places make their decisions without considering the lives that will be affected – the very people government is supposed to serve.

We are learning an important lesson.

How many times have you heard people say politicians only come around at election time? And how many times have you heard people say they’re not interested in politics?

The people of Gates, Camden, and Currituck Counties know that we can’t afford not to be interested in politics.

The people of Gates, Camden, and Currituck Counties know that our government is too important and too powerful to be ignored until election season.

I know that the people of Gates, Camden, and Currituck Counties are too important to be ignored until election season.”

Neal Speaks on the OLF At Edenton Town Hall Meeting Sat, April 5

Residents of Northeastern North Carolina will be discussing the OLF with Jim Neal, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, on Saturday, April 5th.

We’re fighting for everyone to have a government that represents all of us.”

Jim Neal Endorses Barack Obama

Today I am endorsing Senator Barack Obama for President.

In my campaign for U.S. Senate, I have been traveling to towns and cities across North Carolina for the past 6 months, listening to people in churches and schools, in their homes and at cafes.

What these folks all have in common is that they want a political system that involves regular citizens, brings us together and works for the common good. They know America is a great country, and they know our political system is broken. They feel in their hearts we cannot turn to people who are part of the broken system to fix it.

They want a leader who can bring our country together and move us forward.

I have seen Barack Obama show the sincerity and optimism we need to bring us together and make every American proud to be an American.

Barack Obama has inspired a new generation and reinvigorated our democracy.

Barack Obama has reached across lines of race, gender, age and party affiliation – all the categories that have divided our country for too long. He has spoken forthrightly in a candid and humane manner. He has demonstrated the willingness to confront issues, rather than repeating conventional wisdom and poll-tested messages.

I believe Senator Obama is best able to create the new politics that people desire, a new politics that is as great and as inclusive as our state and our nation. That is why I am adding my voice to those supporting Barack Obama for President.

I’ve met with and talked with people - on the road and on my own campaign - who are passionately committed to Hillary Clinton.

It is important that we as Democrats stop fighting amongst ourselves and prepare for the fight against John McCain, and I happen to believe the best way to do that is to come together and support a ticket that has Barack Obama as President and Hillary Clinton as vice president.

Some may say this unity ticket won’t happen. But this year especially we have seen how important it is for us to work for what we want, not just settle for what we think we can get.

Jim Neal Calls For De-Funding Iraq War

I am committed to ending the war in Iraq. Now is the time for North Carolina to have a Senator who will stand by our troops and stand up to the Bush Administration.

When I am in the Senate, I will support using Congress’ power of the purse to cut off funding for the war.

Senator Elizabeth Dole has blindly backed the policies of the Bush-Cheney Administration which took us away from the hunt for Osama Bin-Laden and entangled us in Iraq’s religious civil war.

America has been in Iraq for five years – longer than we spent in either World War. American troops were sent into Iraq with inadequate planning and inadequate force levels.

This war has already cost nearly 4,000 American lives, more than 29,000 American wounded, and the lives of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians. It will cost American taxpayers more than $3 trillion. It has cost our nation the trust and respect of nations around the world. We will bear the scars for generations.

Five years after committing the greatest military error in the history of America, the Bush Administration still does not have a strategy for ending our involvement in Iraq’s religious civil war, for rebuilding our overstretched military and caring for our troops who have been wounded in action.

It’s past time to begin planning for the sensible redeployment of our forces away from Iraq and back towards Osama Bin Laden and his followers.

We have a duty to our troops and their families to ensure they receive the medical care, education and career opportunities they have earned by putting their lives and their comfort at risk for us. We need to spend our tax dollars here at home on what matters most - providing job security for middle-class families, ensuring the health of our families, and leading the fight to protect the air, water and soil which sustains us.

U.S. SENATE CANDIDATE JIM NEAL RECEIVES KEY ENDORSEMENT

Black Political Caucus:
Neal “The Best Candidate on Issues That Affect All Citizens”

(CHAPEL HILL) The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg has endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Jim Neal as “the ideal candidate to defeat Elizabeth Dole.”

Dwayne Collins, Chairman of the Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg says, “The membership of the Black Political Caucus is proud to support Mr.

This endorsement from key African American community leaders adds to the growing momentum of Neal’s people power movement. Neal’s campaign is building a powerful grassroots coalition of black and white, men and women, students and working people, young and old across the state. The latest independent poll by SurveyUSA shows Neal leading his primary challengers.

Jim Neal says, “This endorsement is tremendously important to our campaign. I was raised to cherish the traditional values of equality, opportunity and fair play. North Carolina’s African American community taught the nation these values at a lunch counter in Greensboro where I grew up. It is an honor to have the support of this important organization as we work to take those values to Washington and take our government back from special interests and career politicians.”

The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg voted to endorse Jim Neal after meeting with the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate on Sunday evening. The Black Political Caucus of Charlotte-Mecklenburg is an independent organization of African American community leaders.

Jim Neal, the grandson of a carpenter, public school teacher and two mill workers, was born in Greensboro in 1956, where he attended public school. Hagan Reverses Course - Again

State Senator Kay Hagan has made another public about face. Her campaign is now saying she will join the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate in a debate on March 28 - after failing to meet the deadline for the forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters and Public Radio East.

The Hagan campaign’s assertion that she will participate in the debate came after the Jim Neal campaign revealed that Sen. Hagan failed to tell Public Radio East she would attend the debate. Her campaign web site does not list the debate at Craven Community College in its “Kay’s Upcoming Events” section.

Sen. Hagan has also failed to respond to an invitation from WTVD-TV for a televised debate among the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate.

Today is not the first time Senator Hagan has abruptly changed course.

Hagan, a chair of the state Senate Appropriations Committee, inexplicably entered the Senate race after publicly announcing she had no interest in challenging Elizabeth Dole for the U.S. Senate.
(See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHaauvJnNLA&feature=related)

Jim Neal, the Chapel Hill businessman running for U.S. Senate, is calling on State Senator Hagan to participate in a series of six debates across the state in Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad, Asheville, Fayetteville, and New Bern.

Still no word from Senator Hagan on that.

WHERE’S KAY? State Senator Blows off Debates, Voters

(CHAPEL HILL) The people of North Carolina will have the opportunity to hear the views of all the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate - all except for State Senator Kay Hagan.

Ms. Hagan has ignored the invitation from the League of Women Voters and Public Radio East to participate in the debate at Craven Community College in New Bern on Friday March 28 at 8 p.m. It will be broadcast on public radio stations statewide. The deadline for participating passed this week with no response from Hagan.

Jim Neal, the Chapel Hill businessman running for U.S. Senate, is calling on State Senator Hagan to participate in a series of six debates across the state in Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad, Asheville, Fayetteville, and New Bern.

“These debates will give voters an opportunity to see who the Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate really are and what we believe. It seems Appropriations Chairwoman Hagan thinks this campaign is about calling in favors from high-dollar Capitol insiders to pay for carpet bombing the state with poll-tested political ads, but the people of North Carolina deserve better. They deserve a real discussion of the issues facing our state and our nation,” Neal said.

Hagan’s failure to appear at the New Bern debate is not Hagan’s only rejection of an unscripted exchange before the voters.

Hagan has ignored requests for a debate sponsored by WTVD-TV ABC 11 Eyewitness News Raleigh-Durham.

Hagan, a chair of the state Senate appropriations committee, inexplicably entered the race after publicly announcing she had no interest in challenging Elizabeth Dole for the U.S. Senate. (See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHaauvJnNLA&feature=related)

Neal Reaches Out to Thousands of Grassroots Democrats on March 11

Neighborhood Meetings Hear from Senate Candidate Jim Neal
Neal Reaches Out to Thousands of Grassroots Democrats

At 7:30 pm on Tuesday evening, 15,000 to 20,000 people in every county across the state will be gathering at precinct meetings. It’s politics at the most local, grassroots level as regular citizens meet to elect delegates to their county Democratic Party conventions.

And Jim Neal, the Greensboro native running for U.S. Senate, will be there.

Neal is reaching out to precinct chairmen and has sent campaign materials for every meeting - bumper stickers and buttons - to distribute to local activists, along with a letter thanking attendees for their civic involvement.

In addition, prior to Tuesday’s meeting Neal’s campaign called and made personal contact with 1,200 precinct chairs from Wilkes to Carteret, from Orange to Mecklenburg and all other counties inbetween.

Most people think of political campaigns as TV and radio commercials. But Neal’s message to the thousands of citizens can’t be tuned out or lost in the static of the airwaves - he is reaching people on a personal level. Neal’s sending a strong message of commitment to local activists like no other campaign has ever done.

“This campaign is about involving the people of North Carolina in our government,” Neal says. “Democracy doesn’t begin and end on Election Day. Every day we’re reaching out to people across the state and listening to their concerns and their ideas. And we will continue to do that when I am Senator.”

“For years, we’ve had a Senator that’s shortchanged her constituents. We will change that this November and take our government back so it works for everyone,” Neal says.

Neal will be attending precinct meetings in person this Tuesday in Davidson and Huntersville in Mecklenburg County.

Student Body President, UNC Chapel Hill

Eve Carson was a supporter and friend of the Jim Neal for U.S. Senate campaign. Jim Neal released the following statement today:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Carson family at this heartbreaking time. We share their grief. All of us who knew Eve were brightened by her optimism and idealism, her intelligence and wit, but most of all, her joy for life. Eve had a deep commitment to making the world a better place, and she succeeded. Eve inspired us to work for the dreams we share and she will continue to inspire me.”

Jim Neal Receives Endorsement of Blue America and
eQuality, Nation’s Largest LGBT Online Donor Community

4 Influential Blogs combine to support Senate candidacy

Jim Neal, candidate for U.S. Senate in North Carolina, is proud to announce the endorsement of Blue America PAC, a progressive, online community formed by four high-profile blogs: Crooks & Liars, Firedoglake, Digby’s Hullabaloo, and Down with Tyranny.

The Blue America PAC was formed on August 24, 2006 to raise money to put “Have You Had Enough” on the radio in the form of 60 second advertising spots for various Blue America candidates. Since its founding, Blue America PAC has raised over $1 million dollars for progressive candidates nationwide. Most recently, they raised over $50,000 for Donna Edwards in her upset victory over Congressman Al Wynn (D-MD) of Maryland in the Democratic Primary. Please watch Firedoglake, Crooks and Liars, Digby’s and Down With Tyranny for updates.

Jim Neal’s historic candidacy for U.S. Senate also continues to add high profile endorsements from the LGBT community across the nation.

The latest high-profile endorsement for Jim Neal’s bid to fill the seat once occupied by Jesse Helms comes from E-Quality Giving, link http://www.equalitygiving.org/Endorsed-Candidates.

eQuality Giving is the nation’s largest online LGBT donor community, supporting candidates and causes to achieve LGBT equality.

Neal has also been endorsed by Ambassador James C. Hormel. Nominated as the country’s first openly gay Ambassador by President Clinton, Hormel’s appointment to Luxembourg spanned June 1999 to December 2000. Ironically, Hormel’s appointment was opposed by then-Senator Jesse Helms.

Some of Neal’s other high profile supporters in the LGBT community include:

  • Mike Nelson
  • Mark Kleinschmidt

… and hundreds of other LGBT supporters from across the country who have invested their time, energy, and money, often in low-dollar contributions, to get Jim elected.

Both of these important endorsements will allow Jim Neal to gain momentum in his campaign on the way to the May 6th primary. Continuously building a progressive network of voters and supporters is vital to securing Jim’s election to the U.S. Senate.

Jim Neal Endorsed by Former Democratic Challenger, John Ross Hendrix

John Ross Hendrix, candidate for U.S. Senate, announced today his withdrawal from the U.S. Senate contest.  Mr. Hendrix is endorsing Jim Neal in the May 6 primary for the Democratic nomination.

Hendrix, a Veteran of the 82d Airborne Division, and former Republican, who left the party in disgust in 2006, announced his endorsement after a meeting with Neal and his campaign staff.

“The need to consolidate Democratic efforts toward completing the ‘regime change’ vastly outweighs any personal ambition,” said John Ross Hendrix.  ”I will do whatever I can to insure Jim Neal’s election to the Senate. Mr. Neal will make an excellent advocate for the people of North Carolina and any differences we have in political philosophy are easily reconcilable. I will keep my web site open and use it as a commentary, pulling no punches. At the same time, my sights are already leveled on Richard Burr and the 2010 Senate race.”

“I am honored to be endorsed by my former Democratic challenger, John Ross Hendrix.  Mr. Hendrix ran an honorable campaign and I commend him for taking the opportunity to run for the US Senate.  It takes a great deal of courage to run for public office, and John should be recognized,” Jim Neal says.

Jim Neal’s principal opponent in the May 6th Democratic Primary is State Senator Kay Hagan.  The winner of the primary will challenge Sen. Elizabeth Dole in November’s General Election.

NEAL, HAGAN IN DEAD HEAT FOR U.S. SENATE

The Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate race in North Carolina are neck and neck.

The latest research, conducted by the nationally recognized polling firm SurveyUSA, shows Jim Neal tied with State Senator Kay Hagan in the race to face off against Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole.

The poll shows 23% of likely voters prefer Jim Neal, with 24% for Hagan - a statistical tie well within the 4.2% margin of error.

North Carolina holds its primary May 6th.

Jim Neal says the survey confirms what he’s hearing on the campaign trail. “I’m pleased with these results. It shows our message is beginning to resonate with the voters. We’re running our campaign the old-fashioned way - traveling throughout the state, meeting the voters and listening to what they have to say. Our campaign offers a clean break from the career politicians and insiders who have controlled our government for too long,” Neal said.

The poll found 38% of likely voters are undecided. It was conducted February 11th by SurveyUSA for WTVD-TV in Raleigh and surveyed 550 likely voters statewide.

The North Carolina survey also showed podiatrist Howard Staley was preferred by 8%; John Ross Hendrix, a former Republican, 4%; and truck driver Duskin Lassiter, 3%.

Jim Neal on Bhutto Assassination

Candidate for U.S. Senate comments on death of Benazir Bhutto

The death of Benazir Bhutto is a great tragedy. It is also an example of the futility that comes when people use violence to settle their differences.

American foreign policy cannot rely exclusively on military expenditures to influence events, especially in this unstable region of the world. Pakistan has been and is even more so today the most volatile country in the region. It poses the greatest threat to our national security with its arsenal of nuclear weaponry which remains under the control of military and intelligence leadership with questionable loyalties.

As we celebrate the Message of Peace in this season, let us work and pray that the violence which took the life of Benazir Bhutto does not beget more violence for the people of Pakistan.

NEAL CALLS ON DOLE TO STAND UP TO BIG INSURANCE AND STOP PLANNED CUTS TO MEDICARE THAT WILL HURT SENIORS

(CHAPEL HILL) — Saying that North Carolina stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars over the next two years if Congress doesn’t stop current plans to slash payments to physicians who care for Medicare patients, Democrat Jim Neal, a businessman and investment banker running for the U.S. Senate, today said his opponent should help stop the cuts scheduled to go into effect next year.

“We can quickly solve this crisis if Mrs. Dole and her fellow Republicans will just say ‘No’ to Big Insurance and ‘Yes’ to North Carolina seniors,” Neal said.

On January 1, 2008, the Bush-Cheney Administration’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) are set to cut Medicare payments to physicians by 10.1 percent, with another five percent reduction planned for 2009. North Carolina faces additional cuts of 1.6 percent after the first of next year when a temporary adjustment in the current federal laws expires.

Neal called on his opponent to leverage support among her fellow lawmakers to eliminate the planned cuts as part of the U.S. Senate’s end-of-the-year budget negotiations.

Physicians who treat North Carolina’s 1.2 million Medicare patients will lose $460 million over the two years if nothing is done, according to the American Medical Association. (Note: link opens a PDF file) http://www.ama-assn.org/ama1/pub/upload/mm/399/sgr_states_nc.pdf

Neal warned that the Medicare cuts would also adversely affect North Carolina’s physician-to-population ratio, which is already below the national average. Thirty-six percent of the state’s practicing physicians are over 50 years old, an age at which surveys show many doctor consider reducing their workload and limiting the number of patients they see. Deep cuts in the payments they receive for providing vital health care services to seniors and disabled could accelerate the trends, he said.

Neal said Washington is subsidizing their political allies at big insurance companies through private fee-for-service programs and the new Medicare Advantage, which together receive an average of 12 percent more in taxpayer-funded resources than traditional Medicare.

The AMA, AARP, and other advocates for seniors estimate that the overpayments to insurance conglomerates totals at least $54 billion, undercutting patients and their doctors in traditional Medicare.

“Mrs. Dole and her fellow politicians can reverse the cuts scheduled to start next year by doing away with these billions of dollars in overpayments to their friends in the insurance industry,” Neal said.

The grandson of a carpenter, public school teacher and two mill workers, Neal was born in Greensboro in 1956, where he attended public school.

The oldest, James, is currently working in New York City.

Statement by Jim Neal

(CHAPEL HILL) — U.S. Senate candidate Jim Neal today issued the following statement.
“I got into this race to stay because Elizabeth Dole hasn’t gotten the job done.

With so many politicians in Washington, we need a few leaders who are willing to end our involvement in Iraq’s civil war and redirect those resources to what matters most: economic security and health care for our families here at home.

That’s our challenge, and I’m ready to meet it.”

(CHAPEL HILL) — Democrat Jim Neal, a businessman and investment banker running for the U.S. Senate, today said his opponent’s vote this week to slash $9 billion in funding for vital health, education, and medical research programs is the latest proof that she is out-of-step with the mainstream values of North Carolina.

“Fresh from her refusal to provide health care for 120,000 children of working North Carolina parents, Senator Dole has now slashed funds for child care assistance, college tuition help, and medical research,” Neal said.

Neal said Dole’s vote to cut $9 billion in essential health, education, and medical research funds stands in stark contrast to her support of the Bush-Cheney administration’s latest request for an additional $46 billion in Iraq.

“I talked to a bunch of folks down here in North Carolina – Republicans, Democrats and fence-sitters and they all wish she would be as quick to support families in North Carolina as she is to give her political friends in Washington anything they want,” Neal said.

The grandson of a carpenter, public school teacher and two mill workers, Neal was born in Greensboro in 1956, where he attended public school.

The oldest, James, is currently working in New York City.
